Applying for an Economic License/Freelance: A Worth-Sharing Experience

By Didith Bautista | 11 July 2024

I recently visited the Department of Economic Development in Al Ain to obtain a business license for Beloved Paperie. The staff there were very helpful, and one recommended that I apply for a Freelance License, which is the best option for handmakers, hobbyist, and startup small business owners in the UAE.

They informed me that I could fill out the application form using one of the available computers in their lobby. I could log in using the UAE Pass app on my phone and then proceeded to request the Freelance License service through the TAMM Abu Dhabi website.

The staff greeted me warmly and were very helpful.

The TAMM website guided me through the application process. When I realized that I needed to upload certain documents as part of the requirements, I decided to continue the process at home since the website is accessible from anywhere. These are the 4 documents I uploaded to the system:

  1. Academic Certificate (Diploma, Skills Proficiency)
  2. Accreditation (Proof of Quality Assurance written in CV)
  3. Experience Letter (Letter with Portfolio/Sample of Works)
  4. Gift Acknowledgment Letter (This is just one of the options, I forgot the others, to upload as proof of my source of capital)

During the process, the system prompted me to pay 68.14 AED for the Trade Name Reservation. I made the payment using my bank card, but there were also other options available such as Apple Pay.

After making the payment, I had to wait for two days for approval since I applied on a Friday. Just right after the weekend, Monday, the system notified me that my application had been approved, and I was required to pay the total license fee of 1,181.07 AED.

Once the payment was made, I received the license promptly through email.

And that’s it! This process was incredibly seamless and efficient, especially for someone like me who is just starting small in pursuit of their dreams.

DISCLAIMER: Please note that the process I described may not be accurate and may vary for others, but I wanted to share this positive experience to assist fellow small business owners in Al Ain and commend the exceptional service provided by the UAE government.
